Press Release Body = The Australian Government's emphasis on skilled migration and
rigorous selection policies are ensuring migrants are making a contribution to the
continued growth of our economy. They need to be young, a command of English and
have skills that are recognised in Australia.

Preliminary results from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's third
longitudinal survey of immigrants shows recently arrived skilled migrants are
enjoying strong employment outcomes and job satisfaction.

The results show that after just 18 months in Australia, the employment rate of
migrants in the skill stream is well above the national average at 97 per cent. They
also have an exceptionally high participation rate of 94 per cent - which is about
one and a half times the national average.

Under Labor (between 1993 and 1995) skilled primary migrants (excluding accompanying
family members) had unemployment rates of 25% after eighteen months in Australia.

Migrants on a spouse visa were also experiencing good employment outcomes. They have
an unemployment rate of five per cent and a high workforce participation rate of 72
percent.

The survey group comprised almost 10 000 skill stream and family stream primary
applicants who either arrived in Australia or were granted their visa onshore
between December 2005 and March 2006.

The Australian Government's migration programme is keeping our economy strong by
keeping pace with the demand for skilled labour and helping to address Australia's
ageing of the population and decline in the number of Australians of working age
while ensuring we have a cohesive and integrated community.

The first longitudinal survey covered migrants who arrived between 1993 and 1995 and
the second surveyed those arriving between 1999 and 2000.
